The DTS security team has seen a significant increase in Spyware type activity, reflecting the increase in world-wide activity. Spyware includes spam, viruses, worms, and a multitude of identity theft information programs loaded on a PC, without the knowledge of the user.
Recently, Spyware has been using instant message programs such as AIM, Yahoo Messenger and others to send unsolicited links to users. When the user clicks on the link, the Spyware program is installed behind the scenes and begins to attempt connections back to its source. Another propagation method is through joke e-mails forwarded to end users from friends and family members.
While using instant messenger programs and receiving personal e-mail through web based services such as hotmail is not a security violation, we ask that you never open attachments or click on links that come to you through e-mail or instant messenger programs unless you are 100% certain that the contents are legitimate. It is a never ending battle and never guaranteed to stop all malicious programs. Therefore, we need everyone to stay vigilant and help keep our computers and network safe.
